Buscando inspiración musical en el universo computacional

Throughout the history of western music, composers have relied on “outside-of-time” structures which have served as musical “prime matter” until the moment of their temporal inscription. These structures have traditionally been the scales, rhythmic values, formal schemes, harmonic rules, etc., that composers have employed over and over again. They are to the composer what marble is to the sculptor or colors are to the painter. The advent of computer technology has opened new avenues that allow composers to develop new structures and enlarge their creative horizon. I started my musical training at a very early age, and at the same time I had a lot of scientific curiosity. As soon as I had my first computer (a Commodore 64), I started to experiment, to establish relationships between scientific processes and the world of sound. To date, and following the footsteps of I. Xenakis (although from a different aesthetic perspective), my compositions have always been informed, to a lesser or greater degree, by some underlying scientific idea, and this task can hardly be achieved without computation. Furthermore, today, computer-composers open the possibility to access and use an ever-growing repository of musical material goes a step forward in this direction. And this raises many questions, some of them of a deep philosophical ground.

PALABRAS CLAVES: Comunicación interna, identificación.ABSTRACT The relationship between internal communication and identification in administrative and teaching, as well as the characteristics of the communication in the Educational Institution "San Marcelo" of Trujillo was studied. A causal correlative design was proposed, taking as a unit of study 25 members (administrative and teaching) of the educational institution to whom the questionnaire was applied to measure the internal communication and the questionnaire to measure the identification. Likewise, an observation sheet was used to verify the organization of the internal communication and an interview questionnaire for the director, assistant director, administrative and teaching staff. It was determined that the task of providing all information is the director who disseminates it through various channels or in a direct or verbal way, being fluent with administrative and teaching staff which accentuates identification with the educational institution. Both the internal communication and the identification show a good level in the 76% of administrative and teachers. Likewise, there is a moderate significant correlation between the two variables (r = 0.513, p <0.05), which implies that there is a direct relationship between them, since it is not the perfect correlation, possibly other factors that condition the studied variables. It is concluded that there is a moderate significant correlation between the internal communication and the identification in the administrative and teachers of the I.E. "San Marcelo". We present results for the QUEST RR Lyrae Survey at low galactic latitude, conducted entirely with observations obtained with the QUEST mosaic camera and the 1.0/1.5m J\"urgen Stock Schmidt telescope at the National Observatory of Venezuela. The survey spans an area of 476 sq. deg on the sky, with multi-epoch observations in the V, R and I photometric bands for 6.5x10^6 stars in the galactic latitude range 30<= b(deg) <=+25, in a direction close to the Galactic Anticenter 190<= l(deg)<= 230. The variability survey has a typical number of 30 observations per object in V and I and ~25 in R, with up to ~120-150 epochs in V and I and up to ~100 in R in the best sampled regions. The completeness magnitudes of the survey are V=R=18.5 mag, and I=18.0 mag. We identified 211 RR Lyrae stars, 160 bona fide stars of type ab and 51 candidates of type c, ours being the first deep RR Lyrae survey conducted at low galactic latitude. The completeness of the RR Lyrae survey was estimated in >95 per cent and ~85 per cent for RRab and RRc stars respectively. Photometric metallicities were computed based on the light curves and individual extinctions calculated from minimum light colours for each RRab star. Distances were obtained with typical errors ~7 per cent. The RR Lyrae survey simultaneously spans a large range of heliocentric distances 0.5<= R_hel(kpc)<=40 and heights above the plane -15<=z(kpc)<=+20, with well known completeness across the survey area, making it an ideal set for studying the struc ture of the Galactic thick disk.Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables. La trascendencia del logos universitario: diálogo educativo/ diálogo académico

    Get PDF

Revealed corruption and electoral accountability in Brazil: How politicians anticipate voting behavior

    Get PDF
Governments, civil society organizations, and scholars spend considerable resources implementing and evaluating the effect of anti-corruption interventions. However, decades of cumulative evidence suggest that these interventions rarely lead to the removal of corrupt elected officials from their positions. A recent interpretation of this gap suggests that corrupt politicians often go unpunished because they react to the knowledge of themselves or others being investigated for corruption in unanticipated ways. This dissertation uses data from a long-running anti-corruption program in Brazil to expand on the unintended consequences of anti-corruption interventions that stem from politicians' strategic behavior. The first chapter shows that mayors randomly selected for auditing in the context of this program reduce public spending, particularly in highly visible budget categories, in years close to an election. I argue that this happens because mayors attempt to preserve their reelection chances by signaling fiscal responsibility. The second chapter shows how mayors that are not directly audited, but are in municipalities close to those with mayors exposed as corrupt, tend to seek reelection under different parties more often. As previous accounts of party switching in Brazil suggest, I argue that this occurs because incumbent politicians expect their constituency to react to the news of nearby corruption with increased scrutiny on their own performance in office, which in turn leads them to switch parties in an attempt to secure a better platform for reelection. The question of the effect of exposure to information about nearby corruption opens the door to a broader methodological question of how to capture this type of effect, which is the focus of the third chapter. Research questions in the social sciences usually suggest spillover or interference effects, but rarely provide guidelines on how to model those effects. In fact, theory often suggests many different plausible operationalizations along the same hypothetical pathway. To overcome this difficulty, I propose and illustrate the properties of a model selection approach that uses tools from supervised machine learning to select among alternative operationalizations. As a whole, this dissertation makes two key contributions. First, it shows how politicians' reaction to anti-corruption interventions can stem from an attempt to avoid electoral accountability. Second, by proposing a model selection approach to interference, it expands the applicability of current tools to analyze interference effects to a broader set of research questions

Todos ellos, con excepción del extracto de A. satureioides, afectaron negativamente el comportamiento alimentario de S. frugiperda a 100 μg/cm2.Ethanol extracts obtained from aerial parts of 64 native plants from Central Argentina were tested for their insect antifeedant activity against Epilachna paenulata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) by choice test. Extracts derived from Achyrocline satureioides (Asteraceae), Baccharis coridifolia (Asteraceae), Baccharis flabellata (Asteraceae), Ruprechtia apetala (Polygonaceae) and Vernonanthura nudiflora (Asteraceae), showed more than 97% inhibition of the feeding of E. paenulata at 100 μg/cm2 . These active extracts were further evaluated for their effectiveness against Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). All these extracts except for that derived from A. satureioides, negatively influenced the feeding behavior of S. frugiperda at 100 μg/cm2 .Fil: del Corral, Soledad. Universidad Catolica de Córdoba. Measuring Commonality in Recommendation of Cultural Content: Recommender Systems to Enhance Cultural Citizenship

Recommender systems have become the dominant means of curating cultural content, significantly influencing the nature of individual cultural experience. While the majority of research on recommender systems optimizes for personalized user experience, this paradigm does not capture the ways that recommender systems impact cultural experience in the aggregate, across populations of users. Although existing novelty, diversity, and fairness studies probe how systems relate to the broader social role of cultural content, they do not adequately center culture as a core concept and challenge. In this work, we introduce commonality as a new measure that reflects the degree to which recommendations familiarize a given user population with specified categories of cultural content. Our proposed commonality metric responds to a set of arguments developed through an interdisciplinary dialogue between researchers in computer science and the social sciences and humanities. With reference to principles underpinning non-profit, public service media systems in democratic societies, we identify universality of address and content diversity in the service of strengthening cultural citizenship as particularly relevant goals for recommender systems delivering cultural content. Taking diversity in movie recommendation as a case study in enhancing pluralistic cultural experience, we empirically compare systems' performance using commonality and existing utility, diversity, and fairness metrics. Our results demonstrate that commonality captures a property of system behavior complementary to existing metrics and suggest the need for alternative, non-personalized interventions in recommender systems oriented to strengthening cultural citizenship across populations of users. In this way, commonality contributes to a growing body of scholarship developing 'public good' rationales for digital media and ML systems.Comment: The 16th ACM Conference on Recommender System
